A Camp that Gives…

To be a “camp that gives” means being a camp that cares about more than just ourselves, which is a lesson that we work really hard to impress upon our campers and our staff each day. To pause in the moment of our fun and excitement to celebrate the powerful experiences that are being created through summer camp helps us to be better people and to build a stronger community. We feel truly honored to partner with Project Morry and Excellence Boys Charter School, and to have the opportunity to support them in a variety of ways.

Project Morry is a nationally recognized, youth development organization that empowers youth from at-risk, economically challenged communities to envision a positive future for themselves and the world. During the summer, Walden campers participate in our Project Morry Swim-A-Thon, which allows parents to pledge a donation for each lap their child swims. We also host campers from Project Morry during the summer; they partner with our older campers in activities while experiencing the warmth of Walden firsthand.

As our Walden summer draws to a close, our Excellence Program is just beginning! Excellence Charter School, located in Brooklyn, New York, is a part of Uncommon Schools. It offers an incredible opportunity for underprivileged youth from the boys school to be part of a community that holds high standards for both academic success and strong character. We invite students from the Excellence Charter School at the end of every summer to learn, grow and have fun while experiencing the magic of summer camp.

A summer at camp is certainly an incredible gift for each and every camper. We provide over 30 camp scholarships to students from the Excellence Boys and Girls Charter School, Focus for a Future, and Refugees to Camp, just to name a few. These scholarships ensure that children from all backgrounds and circumstances have the opportunity to benefit from the camp experience.

As we work to positively change the lives of our campers, we realize that the work we are doing and the community we are creating is much bigger than ourselves. Camp Walden is a place that accepts the challenge to do more and be more, and that’s what makes us a camp that gives.
